Google and Authority part 2 Market positioning and backlinks

In part 1 I discussed methods for acquiring backlinks that will almost certainly result in portraying your site in a negative light in the eyes of Google. I wanted to get this out of the way first and stop you in your tracks if you had or where already thinking about going down any of these treacherous roads.

In the next three posts I am going to focus on how to make others to notice you and in turn get Google to do the same. I will discuss the importance of your market positioning, why thinking like an A-List celebrity is important and the power of being “remarkable”.

Get these factors right and authority and backlinks will follow.

Solid market positioning will get you backlinks

Market positioning is defined as the position you, your product or service occupies in your prospect’s mind relative to their perception of your competition. Think of your target’s mind as a ladder – basically you want to be on the top rung and everyone else to be below you. The distance between the number one and number two player in many markets is often a significant order of magnitude. Existing on the top rung gives you immense power and longevity.

A great example of this is Google, even though other search engines had been around for some time and appeared to be in defensible positions, Google used positioning to reposition their competitors in the minds of searchers. Google redefined the whole search experience and now controls a massive 80% of the search activity on the Internet. Google decided from the outset the position they wanted to be in and went for it – the results are history.

Your backlinks strategy is a critical foundation stone of your positioning. Every link you acquire and every visitor it brings should be aimed at positioning yourself in your prospects mind to ultimately bring you a steady growth of more natural backlinks.

I am not saying that to begin with you can achieve natural links, you do need visibility to get visibility if you see what I mean ;-). If you sign up for my service I will share with you tools methods and tips you can use to get the initial visibility you need and get the momentum of getting natural backlinks going.

Positioning is arguably the most critical part of any marketing strategy. Without clear positioning you are confining yourself to the category of “also ran”, which will probably turn out to be fatal.

So I strongly urge you to read the book “Positioning” for two key reasons:

  • if you don’t understand the impact of positioning and what you should be doing about it.
  • if you are choosing or worried about a name for your business, product or website.

It’s roughly a six hour read and will probably change the way you think about your marketing. Just go do it…

Cheers

Nick

  1. Jet Says:

I never really thought about the “authority” aspect as superceding keyword relevancy, but I see how it can in the context that it is a RESULT of other practices ~ including the proper implementation of keyword relevancy (among other things). As the old saying goes, “If it were easy, everyone would be doing it.”
